About Dr. Elsie Crowninshield


Dr. Elsie Crowninshield is a Cardiovascular Nurse Practitioner and Doctor of Nursing Practice. She is a health care entrepreneur with 31+ years’ experience in Cardiovascular and Neurosciences Trauma Nursing and a Board Certified-Nurse Executive, received her BSN from the University of Maryland, Master’s Degree and Acute Care Nurse Practitioner License from California State University, Los Angeles and her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Loma Linda University. Elsie currently works as the Interim Nursing Manager of Cardio/Vascular/Neuro Interventional Lab - LA County Stemi Center- Non-Invasive Cardiology at Providence St. Johns Health Center. She also presently teaches at Capella University with such courses as, Global Global Perspectives of Community and Public Service and Nursing Leadership and Management. She has also previously taught at the University of California Los Angeles and University of Phoenix with courses in Advanced Leadership Theory and Role Integration, Quality Improvement and Population-based Quality of Practice, and Healthcare Policy and Finance. Selected accomplishments include:

• Designed a brand new, state of the art chest pain and observation 8-bed unit and decreased the average LOS from 50 hours to less than 17 hours per patient within 30 days of opening.

• Improved nursing, lab and respiratory medication and specimen labeling scanning into CERNER prior to administration reporting compliance to over 90% in 2016 from less than 65% in FY15 through collaboration with the Informatics Leadership Council, mentoring clinical managers and clinical supervisors in patient driven outcomes.

• Reduced central line blood stream infections & catheter associated urinary tract infections by 25% in critical care and stepdown units 2014 to present.

• Gained medical staff approval for the creation of an acute-care nurse practitioner position for cardiopulmonary services. Authorized the job description, incorporating the support and supervision by cardiologists and the medical directors. The first Dignity Health Cardiovascular Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Team of three CVNP’s manages all cardiology stress testing, all cardiovascular/cardiothoracic surgery and interventional cardiology procedure patient’s throughput and discharges. This effort led to our 100% compliance with all AMI/CHF indicators, decreased readmission rates, decreased LOS from 7 to less than 5 & ventilator hours from 9 to less than 6 on surgical cases, patient satisfaction increased to 92% and zero delays in stress testing procedures.

• Implemented “Scripted Hourly Rounding” campaign to improve patient satisfaction, decrease HAPU and decrease fall rate on a busy 28-bed telemetry unit. Overall, AVATAR patient satisfaction with nursing care scores improved from 70% to 92% overall satisfaction, HAPU’s are ZERO for six months and fall rates with significant injury are ZERO for six months, after implementation of the staff driven, change champion project. Compliance improved with all components of the scripted hourly rounding process.

• Coordinated and led a CERNER APACHE critical care tool GO LIVE including pharmacy, respiratory, lab, physicians, intensivists, and nursing staff - 2016

• Improved Productivity on all three units from on average of 90% for ICU/CCU with a set hppd = 18.7 to 102%; TELE1 average 96% to 103% with a set hppd=11.9 and TELE2 from 98% to 104% with a set hppd=11.2.

• Appointed Chair for 42 hospitals across Dignity Health Research and Analytics Evidence Based Practice Committee & Appointed Voting Member of the Critical Care Executive Critical Care Corporate Team Council

• Redesigned Professional Practice by creating a new structure for Professional Practice Advisory Council, Clinical Practice Committee’s and Unit Based Council’s

• Serves as an Expert Witness as a Healthcare Executive Consultant – Case Reviews-Depositions-Trial Case Expert Witness

• Developed New Graduate Nursing Programs
